Disses on a hit record > a diss record?
Thirteen days after Remy Ma dropped the provocative diss track “ShETHER”, a seven minute direct shot at Nicki Minaj’s career, past relationships, rumored plastic surgery and family drama, Barbs and Hip-Hop fans have received the long awaited comeback from Minaj. Originally given 48 hours for her response, we were given nothing but high fashion pictures of Minaj in Paris. Many counted Minaj out, saying that her career was “murdered” and that she ended up just like her ex Meek Mill.
Remy Ma’s “ShETHER” appealed more to the battle rap culture of Hip-Hop’s origins that many Hip-Hop fans respect and miss. Nicki Minaj has been seen as a pop icon but dropped 3 tracks Thursday night that took jabs at Remy Ma without once mentioning her by name.
1. No Frauds
Nicki Minaj Ft. Drake and Lil Wayne
The first track of the three, I expected a glimpse back into the Young Money “Bed Rock” Days but was ultimately disappointed. This “trap” track starts with the chorus:
“I don’t need no, frauds/I don’t need no, drama when you call/I don’t need no, fake/Soon as I wake up keep an eye out for the snakes, yeah.”
Calling Remy Ma out on her credibility on “ShETHER” and as an artist, Minaj “goes in” on a full verse. Naming her accomplishments and belittling other rappers as usual, Minaj says, “They say numbers don’t matter but when they discussin’ the kings/ They turn around and say Lebron ain’t got 6 rings.” Her bars lacked the fire that we have seen in tracks such as “Roman’s Revenge”, “Monster”, and even “Itty Bitty Piggy”. The only dynamic lines that struck me were:
In these lines, it becomes clear that Remy Ma is the subject of the verse. Minaj took a stab at Ma’s husband Papoose as well as calling her out on her criminal history and motherhood. Minaj even clarifies Ma’s “ShETHER” reference to her money goin through “5” people’s hands. “I never signed a 360, bitch you wild dumb.”
She ends her verse with calling Remy Ma on hypocrisy, claiming that Remy has also had plastic surgery.
Though Minaj did not give the diss track we were all waiting for due to her commercial acclaim, “No Frauds” has already reached number one on ITunes charts in numerous countries such as Brazil, Egypt, Italy and others as well as made it to radio unlike “ShETHER”. Drake and Lil Wayne’s verses also fell short as Drake mentions his attraction to Nicki followed by Lil Wayne’s cliche similes.
2. Changed It
Nicki Minaj Ft. Lil Wayne
This track was my favorite of the three, mostly because of the bass and catchy, auto-tune hook from Lil Wayne. Nicki Minaj takes the first verse again with what seems to be more jabs at Remy Ma.
I find it interesting that Nicki Minaj has features on a diss record and expects listeners to take them seriously. This song along with “No Frauds” sounds like a lot of songs on the radio right now.
3. Regret in Your Tears
The only song of the three that was unaccompanied by Lil Wayne or Drake. This song’s sound is rooted in Nicki Minaj’s Caribbean background. The lyrics portray the end of a relationship where her partner expresses regret towards messing up a relationshipwith a woman that was nothing less than exceptional. This could be seen as a universal experience, as well as Minaj speaking from a personal narrative *hint hint* a diss to Meek Mill. The catchy chorus says it all:
“Regret in your tears, now you taste ’em/ ‘Cause you know I don’t chase, I replace ’em/ Don’t rush, take time, take some/ I just want the memories, tried to make some with you/ Now I gotta erase some with you.”
Meek Mill has been quite vocal on social media during the beef between Ma and Minaj. He’s even caught some backlash from multiple artists such as the Game for his “pettiness” on Instagram. This song could easily be a break-up anthem but it adds to the argument of her being a pop artist. ‘Regret In Your Tears” reminds me a lot of “Save Me” “Catch Me” and “Fire Burns”, all songs that Minaj sings about lost love. If Rihanna were the one singing the lyrics, this song would have been more relevant.
