Album Review: Khalid’s Debut Album, ‘American Teen’

The recent high school grad from El Paso, Texas started to make ripples in the music industry when he released the single ‘Location’ in 2016

For an artist who just started writing music in 2015, this Texan artist is well on his way. Khalid’s soulful voice puts a modern twist on his pop-infused R&B sound. Relating to the youth of his generation, Khalid makes songs about his experiences as a teenager, and dealing with young love. A newcomer to the music scene, Khalid is a classically trained vocalist, and got his an early start with music because his mother sings in the U.S. Army Band. The 19-year old artist released his debut album on March 3, 2017. This was a long awaited album for all of the fans that he gained after the release of his single, ‘Location’ in 2016. Khalid worked with Philly rapper Tunji Ige, and producer Syk Sense, who has collaborated with Drake, Kendrick Lamar and Travi$ Scott in the past, to create the hit song. Unfortunately, I think the best song on the album is by far ‘Location’, but maybe I’m biased since I did hear the single when it was first released a year ago. I highly recommend giving the remix featuring Lil Wayne, and Kehlani a listen too. Khalid is definitely an artist to look out for in the future.
